Uva Ursi

Uva ursi, also known as bearberry, is a plant whose leaves have been traditionally used for urinary tract health due to their antimicrobial and astringent properties. It contains arbutin, a compound that converts into hydroquinone in the body, which helps cleanse the urinary system.

Although not directly related to muscle performance or endurance, Uva ursi may benefit active individuals by supporting urinary tract health, especially those who experience frequent sweating, dehydration, or extended periods in gym clothing, which may predispose them to infections.

It is often found in detox and water-loss blends, sometimes used temporarily by athletes seeking to reduce water retention before events like bodybuilding competitions.

Synonyms:

Bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Benefits:

  • Supports urinary tract and kidney health
  • May reduce mild water retention
  • Has natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties

Sources:

  • Leaves of the uva ursi plant
  • Processed into teas, capsules, and extracts

Observations:

Should not be used for extended periods due to potential liver toxicity from hydroquinone. Often cycled and used for short-term relief. Not intended for daily or long-term supplementation. May interact with medications affecting the liver or kidneys.
