Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace mineral involved in antioxidant defense, thyroid function, and immune health. It is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, a key antioxidant enzyme that protects cells from oxidative stress.

For physically active individuals, selenium supports recovery by reducing oxidative damage from exercise. It also plays a role in maintaining thyroid hormone metabolism, which influences energy production and metabolic rate.

Athletes with high training volumes may have increased needs for selenium due to its role in combating exercise-induced oxidative stress.
