Red Yeast Rice

Red yeast rice is a traditional Chinese ingredient made by fermenting rice with the yeast Monascus purpureus. It contains naturally occurring monacolin K, a substance chemically identical to lovastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug. Because of this, red yeast rice is primarily used to manage lipid profiles.

In the supplement space, it’s often found in formulations aimed at cardiovascular health, which is also a concern for athletes aiming to maintain overall wellness and endurance. The presence of plant sterols and isoflavones may contribute to broader metabolic benefits.

While it’s effective in lowering LDL cholesterol, its similarity to pharmaceutical statins means it should be used with awareness of potential side effects or interactions.
