Octacosanol

Octacosanol is a long-chain alcohol naturally found in the waxy coating of certain plants, particularly sugarcane and wheat germ oil. It is structurally similar to cholesterol but acts differently in the body, where it may support endurance, stamina, and energy metabolism.

Athletes and physically active individuals are often interested in octacosanol for its potential to improve oxygen utilization and delay fatigue. Although more human studies are needed, some animal and preliminary clinical research suggest it may support physical performance, particularly during aerobic activity.

It is also studied for its effects on lipid metabolism and its antioxidant properties, which may help mitigate oxidative stress caused by intense exercise.

Synonyms:

Policosanol (when part of a mixture), 1-Octacosanol.

Benefits:

  • May support physical endurance and oxygen utilization
  • Potential antioxidant activity
  • May aid in lipid metabolism

Sources:

Extracted from sugarcane wax, wheat germ oil, spinach, and other plant waxes.

Observations:

Typically used in capsule form. Dosages vary widely in supplements. High intakes may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals.
