Dextrin

Dextrin is a group of low-molecular-weight carbohydrates produced through the hydrolysis of starch. It is used in sports supplements primarily as a fast-digesting source of energy.

In fitness contexts, dextrin — especially highly branched cyclic dextrin (HBCD) — is favored for intra-workout or post-workout carbohydrate replenishment. It helps maintain glycogen levels and supports endurance during prolonged exercise.

Dextrins are absorbed quickly, making them suitable for immediate energy without the digestive discomfort that some complex carbs may cause.

Synonyms:

Maltodextrin (similar form), HBCD, Resistant Dextrin (specific form).

Benefits:

  • Rapid source of energy during or after exercise
  • Supports glycogen replenishment
  • May improve endurance and recovery

Produced from starches such as corn, rice, or potato.
